Radicalization and Violent Extremism

Fighting terrorism is not among the main functions a school should have. However, it is possible schools can contribute towards less students being drawn to extremist organizations and their messages. Working on the school environment and preventing outsiderness are central elements here.

Terrorism and violent extremism are experienced by many as frightening threats to our society today. For adult Norwegians the 22. of July 2011 is still fresh in mind, while the students starting primary school today were not even born yet. Both in Europa and the rest of the world preventing and fighting terror are of high priority.

On these pages you can read more about radicalization and violent extremism. At the same time, this knowledge is probably not the most important tool in the fight against radicalization. Instead, this tool already exists at the core of the teachers professional competence; the ability to see and meet the student, as well as taking their perspective.
